Buffalo scores a goal on a 3 vs 2
Here is the breakdown
A. Speed and Puck Movement- As the puck is turned over the Buffalo players take off up ice. Notice how well before the offensive blue line the puck is moved to the outside to allow for a wide entry and mid-lane drive.
B. 3 Lanes- This is a little change from the old way 3 vs 2 were taught and a lot of NHL teams are using this type of attack. The puck is entered wide, mid-lane drive is still the same, now instead of having the high guy or 3rd man behind the puck carrier to form the offensive triangle, the 3rd man is outside filling a 3rd lane. The D-Men get activated to fill the high spot behind the puck carrier.
C. Options- With 3 lanes filled the puck carrier has options. 1) Shoot the puck. 2) Make Pass to Mid-lane drive player. 3) Hit player in wide lane. With all these options the Buffalo player goes with option 1 and scores what turns out to be the game winning goal. Many young players don't take this option and try to over pass the puck.
