Marleau shows his breakaway speed in a game vs the Canucks
A. Quick Acceleration- He is able to react quickly to the loose puck and get a jump on the defenseman off the turnover. Players need to be able to react quickly and make this decision as the longer it takes to react, the slower we will be as players.
B. Top Speed- Marleau gets up to top speed quickly and uses his body to get in front of the back checking defenseman. Once his shoulders are past the Vancouver players he steps in front and will be ahead of that player all the way to the net.
C. Shoot the Puck- With his speed on the breakaway, the speed is very hard for Luongo to judge. He puts the puck to the forehand side and lets the puck go with a great snap shot.
There are lots of players who have speed, but few who have that next gear that I call Break-Away speed. Not only using it on a break-away but having the ability to BREAK-AWAY from other players is a great skill to have. To work on adding this to your game, come train at The RINK.
